Each of the RECs is mandated to offer physicians around 20 hours of consultation on technology, EHRs (though not recommend any specific one), help physicians with their technology questions and problems and serve as a resource for the physician. The physician has to pay a $300 initial fee and then qualifies to get the consultation, which they are calculating to be valued at around $4,000 to $5,000 worth of services. The consultation would be available for over a period of 18-24 months, and maybe more if the feds extend the original contracts.
Physicians can also get direct assistance with qualifying their EHR for the federal funds of up $44,000 (maximum) through this consultation, if they and their EHR qualify.
The federal rule sets out that the services of the RECs are aimed primarily to primary care physicians, which are identified as family physicians, internal medicine physicians, pediatricians and OB-Gyns.
When you contact the REC for your area, tell them that you heard about them from the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association (TOMA).
